President's Greeting

From the comprehensiveness of the report by the Dean’s Office under the leadership of Professor Mr. Theodoros Dardavesis, one can discern the multifaceted role of the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) and its essential function as a significant administrative body of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). Its organizational structure, the staffing of the secretariat, and its accreditation, as shaped in recent years through important and substantial initiatives, lay the foundations and constitute a strong basis for its further development.

The organization of numerous events covering a wide range of topics served as an indication of openness, a declaration of presence and accomplishments, an opportunity to highlight initiatives, achievements, and individuals from all departments of the FHS, as well as a platform for cultivating connections and fostering collaborations in various directions.

I intend to continue all these initiatives with the support and participation of the entire academic community while upholding the same values and principles, such as maintaining academic order, respecting hierarchy and tradition.

Assuming the position of Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at AUTH on September 1, 2024, the Dean’s Office sets forth a series of objectives that must be planned and implemented during the current tenure, including:

  • Enhancing Education and Training: Improving the provision of education and training for young scientists in medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as in lifelong learning.

  • Advancing Educational Quality: Within the educational framework of the Faculty, promoting and improving the quality of both clinical service delivery and the training of new researchers, leading to pioneering research in disease prevention and treatment.

  • Systematic and Effective Promotion of Research and Innovation: Facilitating the advancement of basic and applied research, technology, and innovation in health sciences, shaping future directions, and forecasting the necessary resources for achieving these goals.

  • Providing Health and Policy Advisory Services: Offering expert consulting services on health and health policy to public health authorities and relevant government bodies.

  • Expanding and Improving Integrated Teaching: Enhancing integrated teaching while fostering critical, creative, and research-oriented thinking. The optimal balance of depth and breadth of knowledge, familiarity with cutting-edge fields, and engagement in laboratory and clinical work, combined with high-level international research, will enable the Faculty of Health Sciences to meet the country’s developmental needs, disseminate knowledge, and utilize research findings effectively.

  • Promoting the Advantages of Precision Medicine: Confirming and leveraging new therapeutic targets, methodologies, and biomarkers for the development of personalized diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

  • Implementing E-Governance: Developing digital services and advanced electronic systems to facilitate continuous communication between administrative offices, faculty members, research and technical personnel, and students. Ensuring remote access to the Faculty’s systems and electronic services.

  • Supporting Biomedical Research and Education: Strengthening biomedical research and education through interdisciplinary approaches and collaboration among all departments of the Faculty.

  • Gradual Improvement of Infrastructure and Accessibility: Enhancing all physical infrastructure and ensuring easy access for all. The Faculty of Health Sciences consists of four departments, 23 divisions, and 110 clinics and laboratories, housed in four major building complexes within the university campus, seven hospitals in Thessaloniki and the surrounding area, as well as additional facilities at the old railway station and in Kolchiko (Veterinary Medicine Clinics). Discussions will be held regarding the potential use of additional facilities within the university campus, should the relocation of other faculties to upgraded spaces be secured.

  • Improving the Employment Conditions of Contract Workers: Seeking improvements in the employment conditions of contract-based employees at AUTH, some of whom have been working for over 20 years.

  • Enhancing Internal Regulations: Reviewing and updating the internal regulations of all departments, clearly defining the responsibilities and duties of faculty members, research and technical staff, and support personnel. A provision will be added to ensure that regulations are automatically revised and updated in response to changes in legislation or the university’s organizational structure.

  • Fostering Collaboration with Other Academic and Research Institutions: Strengthening partnerships with educational institutions and research organizations both nationally and internationally. Promoting the mobility of faculty members, students, and alumni while actively participating in European and global academic affairs.

In conclusion, I envision a Faculty of Health Sciences that evolves in line with scientific and technological progress, maintaining the highest standards of quality in accordance with internationally recognized criteria. At the same time, it will uphold the following enduring principles:

  1. Excellence in Education
  2. Adherence to Research and Scientific Ethics
  3. Freedom in Research and Teaching
  4. Quality of Services, Efficiency, and Effectiveness in Personnel, Resource, and Infrastructure Management
  5. Transparency in All Activities
  6. Meritocracy in the Selection and Advancement of Personnel
  7. Impartiality in Decision-Making, Both Individual and Collective
  8. Equal Treatment of Genders and Respect for Diversity
